What inspired you to have an ethical wedding?
Since we met three years ago, Sam and I have tried to live our lives with as little impact on the environment as possible.
We switched to 100% green electricity when we bought our first house together last year, grow our own veg in our small garden and have recently set up a business selling re-usable shopping bags and other ethical bags.
When we started planning our wedding, making it as environmentally friendly and ethical as possible seemed like the right thing to do.
What has been the most difficult bit so far?
Finding a venue – we were lucky that my parents stepped in to help us out.
What has been the most fun bit?
Discussing our plans together, trying on wedding dresses, tasting the food from our vegetarian caterer, looking at a half-renovated barn and imagining the possibilities…
What are your 5 top tips for brides and grooms planning an ethical wedding?
Hopefully I’ll be able to answer this more next June – but here’s what I have so far:·
- Ask around – there’s some stuff you just can’t find on the web – word-of-mouth can be more effective
- Use sites like this to get info from other brides and grooms
- Be prepared to compromise – ethical options (such as organic wedding dress material) are often way over budget
- Think outside the box – rather than thinking of the ‘ethical’ version of traditional wedding features, perhaps you could do things totally differently
- Use ebay to get hold of second hand stuff – whether that’s table decorations or your wedding dress
- Have fun – planning a wedding should be a fun and exciting time. Don’t let anything stress you out!
