Hi

I am getting my bridesmaid dresses from Conscious Elegance. I am having a summer wedding so the dresses are cocktail length which is certainly easier for the girls to wear again (like to another wedding!) Beautiful silk based fabrics and made-to-measure for £164 each, not bad for ethical! www.consciouselegance.com , go to party frocks section and look at Amber style. Mine will be one colour in soft green.

What about just not going to wedding fairs ;) ? Do we really NEED to after all? They exist for the purpose of pushing 'stuff' at you. Websites like this are all you need at the end of the day - the info is there on what is out there, but without the in-your-face pressure to buy into anything and everything, and noone there to be critical of your less 'mainstream' decisions. I'm steering well clear!

I went to one wedding fair, a relatively small one at that, and just ended up feeling stupid as people looked at me in shock when I said I wasn't having a DJ, I wasn't sure about the price of the dresses, or said they had never heard of my wedding venue. I'm strong enough to not buy into the whole wedding business too much, but other people aren't and they are ending up spending money they don't have on things they don't need that end up going to waste.

Maybe you could start green wedding fairs? (and bring one to Edinburgh of course!)

Ah, I don't buy into all this stuff about having to have the 'perfect' dress (/hair/flowers/venue/weather....) - enjoy the gorgeous dress you have! There'll always be something better out there but at the end of the day, does it really matter as long as you are really happy with what you have? :)
Oxfam Bridal is amazing, I'd recommend it to anyone!

Grr, I hate the attitude that if a problem is big and widespread then we shouldn't do anything about it even if we can - Ghandi (apparently) said we should be the change we want to see! I also heard a story that someone once accused Mother Teresa's work of being just a drop in the ocean - and she responded 'yes, but the ocean is made up of many drops'! No excuses! :D

I'm so glad to see that Andrew's green initiatives are being appreciated! He kindly contributed some incredibly useful information to my book, "How To Get Married In Green" - and it's worth mentioning that his approach is relevant to all photography, not just the wedding variety.

All good wishes ... Suze

Hi,

I'd just like to back up Andrews advice of always going for a professional wedding photographer. You only get one chance to have your wedding photographs done and leaving it to chance is a big risk which isn't worth taking for a couple of hundred pounds.

My sister got married and hired a friend of a friend who "was really good at photography". He was a nightmare. He could take photos, but he couldn't organise people, didn't know which shot would look the best, so spent ages arranging people, then moving them, then moving them again. Pretty soon everyone lost patience and while it didn't ruin the day, it did upset a few people.

Being a wedding photographer isn't just pointing a camera and clicking away. You need to know which photos work, how the lighting affects the shots and how to direct people (which comes with experience, not with reading a photography magazine).

Always choose a professional where possible
