Diamonds are for never?
Mar 27th, 2007 by Katie
In the wake of Leo’s film ‘Blood Diamond’, conflict free diamonds have hit the headlines in a big way. No longer is the mention of conflict free carbon met with a blank look and a ‘huh?’. Now it’s a, ‘oh, like in that film…’.
But was the film too little too late? Or have the issues moved on?
Since the post I wrote for City Hippy on this subject last year, it seems much has changed.
Now it is not just conflict free diamonds we’re talking about, but green diamonds, fair trade diamonds…
And what has happened to the conflict diamonds, are they still out there?
There are those who say we should drop diamonds altogether, others who insist they are an important industry for workers in developing countries.
In the next few posts on this subject, we will be looking at Canadian diamonds, hearing from Cred Jewellery who are pushing for the introduction of fair trade certification for diamonds, and getting ready for green diamonds.
We also want to hear from you. Do you already have a diamond ring? How did you choose it? Or did you decide against diamonds? Do you have a good alternative for us?
Have you seen the film ‘Blood Diamonds’? Was it useful? Will it make a difference? Or did it come too late?
Drop us a line…and let the diamond debate begin!
Take care,
Katie
