Spreading the ethical message

I’ve not posted for a couple of weeks as Phil and I have been away on holiday, visiting one of my cousins who will be a bridesmaid next year, and staying with two of our friends who are also shortly getting married.
One of the things I love most about planning a wedding is the excuses it gives me to make more contact with my family and friends! I am really enjoying getting to know all my family better as I discuss the wedding plans with them. And they all seem interested in the ‘green wedding’ idea, which gives me hope that we are encouraging other people to think about the environment a bit more. Many people are surprised that we have thought about the impact of our wedding on the planet, but when I show them how interesting it is to investigate green alternatives, they quite often get interested with me…
For Phil and I, the planning milestone this week was a visit to the registry office to give notice of our ‘intent to marry’. This is like a mini exam where the registrar asks each of you questions about the other while they are out of the room! Luckily they are only simple questions such as age, address and job title. But it’s a little nerve racking none the less because it seems so important.
As well as your passport, one of the things you have to show the registrar is proof of your address. If, like me, you receive all your household bills online to save paper and don’t receive any printed bills or statements, you may find yourself in the interesting position of not having any proof that you currently live at your home address! So it’s worth knowing, as I found out from the registrar, that a photocard driving licence works as proof too. And if your employer still sends you paper payslips (mine doesn’t, but many still do) that’s ok as well.
The registrar herself was interested in our wedding. She told us that more and more people are choosing to get married in unusual ceremonies. I might send her the link to ethicalweddings.com and see if she will include it in the information pack she gives out to couples!
