Try car sharing website for weddings
Aug 14th, 2010 by Katie
When we were planning our wedding we tried to help people car share as much as we could. We found out who was going from where and did our best to match them up with our friends and relatives on similar routes.
But as you’ll know, when you’re planning a wedding you have a lot of stuff on your mind and it’s easy for little green details like these to fall by the wayside.
So I was pleased when goCarShare.com (GCS) popped up in our Ethical Weddings Forum. It’s a free service (they just ask for contributions if you’ve found it useful and are feeling flush) and you login via your Facebook account (erm, not sure what you do if you don’t have one – better ask GCS). You then enter your starting point and destination to find out who else is going your way.
They don’t talk specifically about weddings on their website but to make it work for you I guess you would email all your guests with the goCarShare.com website (and include it in the ‘getting here’ section of your hard copy invites too if you’re having them) and ask (very nicely) anyone who is driving to the wedding to register their details on the site.
Get me to the church!
Potential passengers would then be able to find your drivers – or if they’ve been too quick off the mark and started looking before your drivers have registered they can email gomail@gocarshare.com to get an alert when someone adds the journey they need.
The bonus of the site working through Facebook is that (providing you have an account!) you can see which friends or friends of friends are going the same way – so it should be easy to spot fellow wedding guests.
Sadly we’re not planning to renew our vows any time soon so we have no guests to try it out on… but if you decide to give it a go, we’d love to hear how it works out for you (and if everyone makes it to the church on time!).

Katie,
Thank you so much writing this article about goCarShare – it’s incredibly kind of you.
I would love to get as many people car sharing to weddings as possible. In terms of organisation it should make everything much easier for you (the wedding couple) as your guests will be finding people to car share with on the site (rather than expecting you to sort it out!).
As well as resulting in a greener wedding, it will mean that guests can get there cheaply, as they share the petrol costs, and that they will have a fun time getting to meet new people en-route.
We have tried to make the site really intuitive to use but I am more than happy to guide people through it, so fire away if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Drummond
PS If you use it for your wedding, I would love to hear your experience of using the site.
PPS When I get a spare moment I’ll put up a Blog about car sharing to Weddings.
I didn’t think of this idea for my wedding and this is really surprising and at the same time really unique. Hope more brides will have your car sharing website type of idea to help guests while attending their wedding.
I have never heard of this service. What a great idea. Thanks for sharing information about car sharing.
