Veggie weddings
May 23rd, 2007 by Katie
For today’s post, I am very pleased to welcome Liz O’Neill, Head of Communications for The Vegetarian Society, to tell us a little bit about her wedding and her thoughts on veggie weddings in general. Over to Liz:
Being vegetarian is a big part of most veggies’ lives so naturally it is also important to any veggie bride or groom’s big day.
Food is obviously a big issue and with the wonderful choice of veggie dishes around and even a choice of specialist vegetarian event caterers of offer, serving a completely meat-free meal is a real option, whatever your budget or ambitions for the day.
My husband and I are both veggie and we never even considered serving meat to our guests who all seemed very happy indeed with the wide range of tasty fare prepared by a local vegetarian restaurant.
When it comes to the dress (and ties), I personally opted for artificial fibres but there are now some options for veggie-friendly silk.
I can’t make any specific brand recommendations as none are licensed to carry our ‘Vegetarian Society Approved’ logo, but if you trust your manufacturer’s endorsement that they only use silk harvested from moths which left the cocoons naturally then you should be fine.
One final issue that often gets missed – especially if you’re going for a big blow-out in a posh hotel – is bone china.
Do you really want to eat your wedding breakfast from a plate made with the skeleton of a dead animal, or would your guests be happy with the ordinary ceramic table service?
Thanks, Liz. Certainly a few issues to consider there. If you’re a vegetarian planning your wedding, get in touch. Did you go for artificial fibres like Liz or did you manage to track down some veggie-friendly silk? What has been the trickiest bit to organise? We’d love to hear your stories.
Happy planning!
Katie
Hi,
My husband (now) and I got married on 19th May. He’s not a vegetarian, but understood how important it was to me and we had a vegetarian wedding reception. I was delighted to be able to have a dress made to my design, with fair-trade organic cotton underlays, and vegetarian silk, by a dressmaker I found from the ethical weddings website - Wholly Jo. The dress was beautiful and my husband adored it. The food went down pretty well too!
Best wishes to all those of you planning to do the same.
