Waste-free Welsh weddings?
Jul 27th, 2007 by Katie
According to icWales, Waste Awareness Wales (WAW) has been asking brides and grooms to think about having a green wedding to cut down on the huge amount of unnecessary waste they can create, suggesting donations to charities rather than ostentatiously wrapped gifts, and email responses to invites rather than hand-written RSVPs.
Obviously, we’re all for it here but apparently some etiquette experts are up in arms!
Sarah Haywood, a wedding planner and author of the Wedding Bible, said:
“If a couple is not eco-friendly all year round then why do it on the wedding day?”
It’s a fair point but as we’re all going to have to make changes to our lifestyles sooner or later with global warming now a given, what better way to start than with your wedding day! On such a potentially extravagant occasion, you could do an enormous amount of good in one day by just thinking of ways to reduce the waste and making sure your wedding pounds go into the right pockets - supporting fair trade and local producers.
Haywood goes on to say:
“My company hasn’t seen any rise in people wanting environmentally friendly weddings. More people want their food locally sourced but that’s about as far as it goes.”
We suggest Sarah takes a trip to the Ethical Weddings Forum to meet the brides whose concern goes much further than food.

I think it’s so weird when people get all up in arms about green weddings. Especially when they try to point out something eco-friendly that you’re NOT doing and this somehow negates all of the great things you ARE doing. I see this argument constantly around environmental issues. I wish more people would embrace the power of small changes and realize that it doesn’t need to be all or nothing.
